I'd prefer a medium to large dog. (Around the range of 50-70 pounds.)
With a small dog, I'd worry about their fragility when going out and about. Other dogs attacking, being stepped on by a person, etc. Also, there's the stigma that all small dogs are untrained and yappy.
With a very large dog, they're harder to cuddle (too big or too heavy), and cost more to feed. I'm referring to dogs who are, say, 80 pounds or bigger.
I don't have a pet dog right now, but I'm on the wait list to get a service dog due to my disabilities. My future service dog is very likely going to be a standard poodle.
As a child and teen, I had a 65-pound Aussie mix. I've never owned a small dog, but I've spent time around them.
